Interactive Learning Resource Peer Review – Pod #5
We reviewed pod #7’s project: https://sites.google.com/view/interactivelearningresource/home
Overview
Your interactive learning design is pretty solid so far. Right from the get go it shows you have put a lot of thought into the project ideations, analyzing the challenge of why fractions are especially difficult and the target demographic, i.e., early students. Your research is grounded on theoretical points, and understanding concepts like ontogenetic, didactical, and epistemological difficulties give your resource legitimacy and shows that you’re thinking extensively about where student struggles actually come from. What resonated with me the most was your focus on the emotional aspects of learning. By addressing mathematical anxiety and low motivation directly, you acknowledge that teaching fractions is about more than just the maths, it is also about understanding how students feel while learning. That level of empathy goes a long way, especially for a topic that so many kids find challenging.
Strengths
Clear display – The layout of your blueprint is great. I found it really easy to follow, and each part made sense with the last. It aligned well with the project outline, making it clear that all the needed information was there. The layout of your contributions was also nicely displayed in a graph with timelines, showing who did what and how you worked together to stay organized.
Learning outcome & activities – After reading your overview of your goal to help ages 8-11 learn fractions, I thought your learning outcomes were well thought out and clearly explained. They were simple but still had specific descriptions. It was nice to see that you reflected them in your learning activities clearly by shortening the outcome into the topic and building that connection. All the activities were creative and engaging for your specified age group.
Another strength I noticed was how well your learning theory connects with the context of your learners. In your overview, you show a clear understanding of the needs of 8 to 11 year old students. Your theoretical framework really supports the way you designed the activities, showing you paid close attention to how this age group processes information.
Areas For Improvement
The resource is overall very strong. One area you might consider refining is making the connection between your learning objectives and assessment plans more explicit. The formative and summative assessments seem well designed to support student learning, but I think explicitly linking how each assessment will be used to measure whether an objective has been met would make it clearer how you plan to measure each objective.
I also like your use of interactive learning through activities and group discussions. I do think it could be helpful to clarify the structure of these interactive activities a bit more. For example, in the activity where students work in small groups to compare fractions, I didn’t find it entirely clear how participation would be distributed among group members. You might consider specifying roles or providing guiding questions to make sure all students are actively engaged in the discussion.
I also appreciate how different means of engagement will be offered to help learners who may be struggling. I think that providing more concrete examples of how diverse learners are supported (e.g. through language supports or alternative ways to demonstrate their understanding) would strengthen the inclusivity of your design.
For the technology section, I might have missed something, but it would be helpful to see a stronger rationale for your chosen digital tools. You might consider adding a brief explanation of how these tools directly support your outlined learning objectives. Also, looking at your resources and content page, it seems to me that providing a couple of examples of the actual materials the students will use could help clarify your overall plan.
Final Thoughts
Overall, your learning design is very thorough and well done. With a few small refinements in some areas I think it could be even stronger. It seems like an effective approach to teaching fractions, and we enjoyed reading through it. The whole website is pretty straightforward to navigate too and the way you integrated inclusion throughout the design is also impressive. And it was interesting to see how you tackled the assessment plan for this age group.
